It was stupid to think he’d read it. And even more stupid to think he’d actually reply. Both of which became abundantly clear as I sat there, alone in Starbucks, staring at my screen, waiting for the “read” notification to pop up beneath my text box. Finally, after what felt like a hundred years, I gave up and decided to go home. At least there, I wouldn’t be judged by someone’s granny.

I had my phone in my purse, my purse strap over my shoulder, and my pride in the toilet as I made my way outside. Only to discover that I wouldn’t be going anywhere with four flat tires. My very first thought was, whose dog did I kick in a past life to get this kind of luck? Then I asked myself, how would I have popped all four tires without noticing I’d run over anything? But the more I stared blankly at the deflated rubber, the more I began to understand.

I hadn’t kicked anyone’s dog.

I’d slept with someone’s fiancé.

Oh, and unfortunately, that had happened in this life.
